PCF Calculation for Your Lubricants and Grease Portfolio

Define Your Next Steps to Calculate the PCFs for Your Portfolio

In this interview, we sat down with Ashley Chong to explore how Pentas Flora approached an LCA and PCF study for recycled products, navigated key methodological challenges around system boundaries, allocation methods, and data quality, and used the results to strengthen customer communication, ESG reporting, and its circular economy strategy.

Could you briefly introduce your company and describe the specific goals you aimed to achieve?

Pentas Flora is Malaysia’s leading licensed scheduled waste management and recovery company, specialising in the collection, treatment, and regeneration of used lubricating oils into high-quality re-refined base oil (RRBO). Our mission is to promote a circular economy by extending the lifecycle of used lubricants while reducing their environmental impact.

To better understand and demonstrate the environmental performance of our regenerated base oil products, we aimed to conduct a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) study. Our goal was to quantify the environmental benefits of our re-refining process, provide our customers with scientifically robust carbon footprint data, support our ESG reporting, and further strengthen our position as a sustainable producer of recycled base oils.

What barriers did you face?

One of the main challenges was defining system boundaries that appropriately represented the collection, transportation, treatment, and regeneration of used lubricating oil. We also needed to select an appropriate allocation method for the recycled feedstock, as these methodological choices determine how environmental burdens and potential benefits are assigned across the product system.

At the same time, we needed to ensure that the assessment complied with the relevant international standards for LCA and PCF, including ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 for Life Cycle Assessment and ISO 14067 for Product Carbon Footprint calculations. Another important aspect was correctly assessing the environmental impacts of waste-derived products within the context of circular economy principles.

How did you overcome these barriers?

We overcame these barriers by working closely across our production, laboratory, logistics, engineering, and sustainability teams to ensure accurate and complete data collection. Each function contributed the operational and technical information required to represent the re-refining process accurately. Throughout the process, Carbon Minds provided valuable technical guidance, supported data collection and quality checks, clarified methodological requirements, and helped us interpret the assessment results.

Regular discussions and iterative reviews allowed us to continuously improve data quality, resolve uncertainties, and successfully complete the assessment within the required timeline.

What did you achieve in the end?

In the end, we successfully completed the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculations for our regenerated base oil products and established a certified environmental baseline for them. This gave us a stronger basis for communicating our environmental performance transparently and credibly to customers and stakeholders, while also supporting our sustainability reporting and ESG initiatives.

The assessment also improved our ability to respond to customer requests for environmental product information and helped quantify the environmental benefits of waste oil regeneration. In particular, it demonstrated the environmental advantages of re-refined base oil compared with virgin base oil production, strengthening our circular economy strategy and increasing customer confidence through scientifically supported environmental performance data.

Working with Carbon Minds gave us a credible, data-backed basis to demonstrate the climate and environmental impacts of our re-refined base oil and communicate the results with confidence to customers and stakeholders.
