When you started this project, what was your goal? What were you trying to achieve?

Master Fluid Solutions is a leading manufacturer of metalworking fluids with a European competence center in Düsseldorf. Under the brands TRIM™ and WEDOLiT® , the company offers high-performance products for the highest technical requirements, productivity and efficiency.

 

TRIM™ features versatile, water-miscible cutting and grinding fluids for metal cutting. The products convince with their long sump life, high efficiency and process stability. In addition, Master STAGES™ system and surface cleaners ensure for efficient machine and workpiece cleaning.

 

WEDOLiT® offers high-performance products for temporary corrosion protection, cold forming (e.g. pipe drawing) and expander oils for non-cutting metal processing operations.

 

Our product portfolio offers cost benefits through lower consumption, shorter cycle times and minimized tool wear. With innovative metalworking fluids, we support our customers in making their metalworking processes more efficient and sustainable.

What barriers did you face?

  • What specific challenges did you face that led you to use our data or additional services?
  • For the calculation of the PCF additional FP-values of raw materials are necessary which are not available from our suppliers, or the data delivered by the suppliers are not validated. That for these data were delived by CarbonMinds. In addition, the calculation method was applied and PCF-certificates were generated.

How did you overcome those barriers?

Mainly two things. A valuable learning opportunity came from the collaboration with other TfS members in the workstream dedicated to the PCF project. Furthermore, Carbon Minds supported us with the creation of the methodology document, carried out an in-house training session on LCA, provided us with life cycle data and helped us navigate the TÜV certification process. Both of these external sources of support, TfS and Carbon Minds, were very important in filling our experience and knowledge gaps. This resulted in our internal experts learning a lot very quickly.

How did establishing a PCF methodology work for you exactly?

What did you manage to achieve in the end?

PCF of first formulations with the goal to calculate the PCFs of the entire European product portfolio by end of 2026. First impact is to accomplish the inquiries from the customers to supply the PCFs on request, in a next step reduction of CO2 as an aspect of the continious improvement process will follow.
