Bayer, a global life science company, uses Carbon Minds high-quality data to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at scale.

In this interview, we sat down with Olaf Stange and Jens Plambeck to explore Bayer's path to net zero and how they use Carbon Minds' data to drive emission reductions.

Olaf Stange, Head of Supplier Decarbonization at Bayer, and Jens Plambeck, Senior Manager Supplier Decarbonization.

When you started this project, what was your goal? What were you trying to achieve?

Bayer aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain and achieve a net-zero state by 2050 at the latest. By 2030, we will have achieved significant reductions in line with Science-Based Targets criteria. To take action we need accurate data.

What barriers did you face?

Measuring and managing emissions in the supply chain is a challenging task. Data availability is a hurdle. Data coverage, quality, and consistency are challenges too. Yet, good data is essential for assessments, discussion with suppliers, and to capture the impact of reductions.

How did you overcome the barriers?

We screened the market for partners to collaborate with us in building a good data foundation. And we found Carbon Minds, amongst others.

Good data is essential for assessments, to facilitate discussions with suppliers, and to capture the impact of reductions.

Jens Plambeck,

Senior Manager Supplier Decarbonization

What have you achieved in the end?

We integrate the Carbon Minds PCF data into our newly developed central GHG Data Model. This model is our backbone for GHG accounting and reporting. We also use the data from the model for our own PCF-calculations.

How did Carbon Minds support you along your journey?

Together with Carbon Minds we mapped the goods which we purchase to their PCF library. Our Carbon Minds license enables us to continuously integrate up-to-date PCFs into Bayer GHG Data Model, allowing us to benefit from sector advancements and improvements in PCF data quality.
