In this interview, we sit down with Anna Schröder to discuss how high-quality secondary Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data has enabled LANXESS to fill data gaps, enhance carbon footprint accuracy, and communicate transparent and reliable results across its portfolio.

Could you briefly introduce your company and describe the specific goals you aim to achieve?

At LANXESS, we see ourselves as a partner for industries and our customers worldwide, from automotive and agriculture to construction and consumer goods. Headquartered in Germany, we deliver high-quality chemical products and materials while keeping sustainability at the forefront.

LANXESS uses Product Carbon Footprint data to analyze the life cycle of our products in detail, identify greenhouse gas emissions hotspots, and identify ways to reduce emissions, waste, and resource use. We also wanted to communicate our sustainability efforts clearly to customers, stakeholders, and regulators.

What barriers did you face?

One of the main barriers we faced was obtaining accurate data to measure the environmental impact of our products. To achieve this, we rely on high-quality Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data, which ideally comes directly from our suppliers. However, in practice, not all suppliers were able to provide this information. This gap made it challenging to obtain comprehensive and reliable data for all our raw materials.

By combining Carbon Minds data with our own material information and building internal LCA expertise, we achieved accurate, consistent carbon footprint data across our product portfolio.

How did you overcome these barriers?

To overcome the challenges of obtaining consistent and reliable environmental data, we started using Carbon Minds data and matched it with our own raw material information. This approach enabled us to cover a significant share of our materials and reduce the need for approximations.

 

In addition, we participated in an in-house training provided by Carbon Minds, which helped us build internal expertise and deepen our understanding of LCA and PCF.

What have you achieved in the end?

The Carbon Minds database supports us in our ambition through higher data availability and data accuracy.   We improved the coverage of carbon footprint data across our raw material portfolio thanks to the large number of datasets available and the extensive region-specific coverage within the Carbon Minds database.

In addition, PCF insights enable us to provide credible, data-based sustainability information for our annual reports, ESG disclosures, and customer communications.
